Background

Son of famed military scientist, Adam Fenix, Marcus established a reputation as a brilliant soldier during the Pendulum Wars, earning field promotions and decorations. He was on a fast track to an outstanding military career, until the war with the Locust Horde began.

One long decade after Emergence Day, the Horde Army breached Jacinto Plateau's defenses and Marcus defied orders so he could save his father. He was too late, and in addition to losing his father, Marcus was charged with dereliction of duty and was sentenced to 40 years in Jacinto Maximum Security Penitentiary; while it's later shown that Marcus's father was mapping the underground tunnels of the Locust Horde (a detail integral to the plot of Gears of War), it's never revealed whether Marcus was aware of how important his father's research was when he attempted to save him, or whether he specifically knew it related to the Locust Horde. Nonetheless, it can probably be assumed he did not. It is also rumored that the end boss, General RAAM, was the killer of his father, thus justifying the look Fenix gives him in the game.

Four years into his sentence, the Horde overtook the Jacinto Penintentiary, but Marcus was rescued by his best friend, Dominic Santiago, so that he could join the fight against the Locust Horde Army.

Joining Delta Squad

Act 1

Pvt. Fenix joins Delta Squad after his friend, Dominic Santiago, rescues him from the destroyed and deserted Jacinto Penintentiary. There, Marcus and Dom fight through the rubble of the facility, facing numerous Horde Drones the entire way. After they escape the Jacinto MSP, they fight a number of Drones before getting evacuated via King Raven Helicopter.

After pickup, Fenix meets Lieutenant Mihn Young Kim and Private Carmine inside the crew compartment of the King Raven. They were to head to Embry Square where they meet Colonel Victor Hoffman and Lieutenant Anya Stroud. Fenix is not happy seeing Col. Hoffman again, but is delighted to see Stroud coming out of the Raven.

Fenix and the rest of Delta squad fight through the city streets, in an attempt to find Alpha squad. Along the way, half of Delta is killed by a Locust Sniper (Carmine) and by General Raam (Kim), but they are joined by Pvt. Cole and Pvt. Baird from Alpha Squad. After the deaths of Pvt. Carmine and Lt. Kim, Fenix and Santiago, with the help of Alpha Squad try to find a way out of the building. But in between them, and escape, is a Berserker. After Fenix and Santiago make it out of the building, they call in the Hammer of Dawn on the Beserker, killing it. In the event Marcus is promoted to the rank of sergeant and becomes the new leader of Delta Squad. The rapidity of his promotion likely reflects the achievements of his military career prior to his court-martial.

Act 2

Fenix and his squad head to a settlement populated by Stranded, civilians who are caught outside of COG authority. Dom has had contact with one of the Stranded and intends to call in a marker: the use of his vehicle. Cole and Baird are left behind as collateral for the usage of Dom's friend's car. As darkness falls over the city, the Locust Horde is no longer their only problem: nighttime brings out ravenous Kryll, small flying creatures that are repulsed by bright light. Fenix and Dom venture across the battle-scarred ruins of the city trying to avoid the Kryll by blasting propane tanks to illuminate their path and repel the creatures. Eventually Fenix and Dom reach the gas station where the vehicle is located. They fight off a small force of Locust Horde with the help of the station's owner and take off with the vehicle just as enemy reinforcements arrive. They drive off into a highway while being pursued by a large swarm of Kryll, where they outrun and elimante the swarm using the vehicle's turret. Fenix and Dom reach the camp and are reunited with Cole and Baird, where they fend off another attack by the Locust.

Act 3

The chapter begins with Delta Squad outside the gates of the Imulsion refinery during a heavy downpour. As they approach the factory, Fenix and the squad glimpses Locust Wretches that appear to glow in the dark. Anya informs them that these Wretches have had prolonged exposure to Imulsion and are subsequently volatile. In fact, upon death their bodies explode. The team splits up: Fenix and Dom gain entry through the roof, Cole and Baird through the basement. They fight their way through the factory and gain entry into the mine, which is regarded as enemy territory. After defeating a Locust Corpser, the squad finds the Imulsion pumping station which will provide their escape. Once the station is secured, the resonator is detonated while the squad quickly returns to the surface.

Unfortunately, the resonator fails to deliver complete results: the data obtained is only a fragment of what is needed. While inspecting a Geobot he recovered from underground, Baird (the team's mechanical wizard) discovers that it contains mapping data that is far more extensive than what the resonator provided. The origin of the Geobot is quickly determined to be East Barricade Academy, from the workstation of Fenix's own father. Delta Squad is quickly dispatched to search for this laboratory.

Act 4

Marcus' father was a top military scientist and in this mission Marcus must return to his former home, in an attempt to retrieve the research his father was working on. The research turns out to be a complete map of the Locust tunnels.

Act 5

Fenix must lead his squad onto a train carrying the lightmass bomb, and enter the data that was retrieved from the mansion, leading to a final showdown with General Raam.
