Woodstock Day School is an independent coeducational school serving students from nursery school through high school with rigorous programs on socially and environmentally mindful education and emphasis on individuality.[2] It is located in Saugerties, New York in the United States. It is about 3.5 miles east to the town of Woodstock. Woodstock Day School is a charter member of the New York State Education Department, and focuses on progressive education.

The students number 179 from preschool through 12th grade, as well as 47 faculty, administration, and staff members. The campus includes 40 acres of forest; a school garden and farm; an early childhood building with its own outdoor playground; two science buildings for lower school and upper school; a library and media arts center; totaling with 11 buildings; in addition to a swimming pool, outdoor theater, soccer field, basketball court, and a lake and stream located near the main campus.

Annual tuition as of 2019 is between $11,000 and $17,000 depending on grade level.[3]

History

It was founded in 1973 as the Woodstock Children's Center. In August 2018[4], David Penberg was named Head of School.[5]

Academic Program

The curriculum is built on project-based learning, with emphasis on emotional and social development, as well as routines and relationships. It's core value is built on ideas of mindful citizenship.

Learning community

The curriculum at Woodstock Day School is built on the Learning Community, which kicks off during September. There is no homework in this period as teachers plan activities with their new students and build the foundation for learning by teaching students that they belong, that they are valued, and that they have something to contribute.

No test scores

That curriculum is different for each student, tailored specifically for them. It also means student progress is not judged by test scores. "Accountability means delivering the mathematics, science, English, Social Studies, language, and arts curriculum that have been carefully selected or designed for each age group, and planning lessons, units, and assessments that keep students engaged, thinking critically and creatively, working collaboratively, and moving along the learning continuum."[2]

Battering Ram Literary Journal and LitCon

The Battering Ram was founded by students in 2011. It publishes writings from Woodstock Day School students, as well as the works of other high school or primary school aged students from around the world. It has won an award from The National Council of Teachers of English in 2016.[6]

LitCon is an event in March that showcases creative writing, fiction, poetry, nonfiction, sketches, drawings, and photography, with an emphasis on experimental writers and hybrid artists who are in middle school and high school.

Project Drawdown EcoChallenge

In the 2019 challenge, Woodstock Day School became the winner of the EcoChallenge, out of 1,054 teams from 79 countries with 14,144 participants. Drawdown is based on Paul Hawken’s book “Drawdown: the Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming”, and the school's participation[7] started[8] after attending the Drawdown Learn event held at the Omega Institute.[9]

Extracurriculars

Clubs and activities are organized around lower, middle, and upper school.

Recent offerings have included: Robotics; Karate; Archery; Yoga; Traditional Guinea Dance; African Dance; Dance Residencies; Jewelry Making; Knitting; Ceramics; Lego; Math Club; Chess; Drama and Theater; Musical; Soccer; Basketball; Lacrosse; Cross Country; Ultimate Frisbee; Ski Club; Student Government; Roundtable[10]; M.O.A.S (Model Organization of American States); The Battering Ram; Social Action Club; Gay Straight Alliance; Gaming; Engineering; Advanced Ensemble; Hydroponics[11]; Animation; Wayfinder Experience (with foam swordplay)[12]; Woodland Fairy Fun; Literary Luncheon Book Club; Buddy Program; and “Tinkering,” which involves making new and useful objects out of recycled materials.[13]
