South East High School is a comprehensive 4 year high school located in the southeast area of South Gate, California. The school is the newest comprehensive high school located in the Los Angeles Unified School District as was built to eliviate the crowding at nearby South Gate High School, Bell High School, and Huntington Park High School. The school only houses 1,800 students, but will house many more within the next 4 years, since seniors have not been introduced to the school yet.

Construction

South East High School was completed in June of 2005 on a 26.6 acre plot of land on the site of the old Gemeral Motors plant in South Gate, California. It is on one of the pargest lots of any school in the LAUSD, and is bordered by the new South East Middle School to its south, and a comprehensive adult education center. It is part of the South Gate Education Gateway, which is composed of all the schools located on the old General Motors site in the city.

The school is the first public high school in the Los Angeles district's metropolitan city area in over 70 years [2]. Included in the South East High School plan was a student store, health office, food service, cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, sports fields and administration offices.

The lead archictect was Taylor Fierce, a firm located in the Los Angeles area, and is described by this statement below.

20.367 mq / 223,000 s.f. - Completed 2005. This state of the art facility houses 223,000 square feet of program for 2,500 students. The overall campus design includes six buildings on a 30 acre site consisting of a comprehensive sports facility with stadium and gymnasium, a band and choral wing with outdoor amphitheater, a 800 seat theater style auditorium, a library, classrooms and labs. This project was designed by Steve Fierce. [3].

The mascot of SOuth East High School is the Jaguar, and the school colors are blue and silver. It was one of three options considered by the school board for the school mascot in 2004. The district held a survey of all students who are to attend the school, and found that the Jaguar mascot was more popular than the Bear logo, and that blue and silver was preferred over green and silver or green and orange.

Dancing, singing and drawing are all forms of art that are gravely appreciated by various students. This is why so many students opted for the V.A.P.A Academy more than any other academy on campus. The Visual and Performing Arts Academy allows students to participate in the arts, not only through electives, but also in customary classes. In an art history class, the teacher might focus on the music that was being created at the time or the painter that was producing masterpieces during that time period. V.A.P.A can be seen as an academy which focuses on the personal growth of the student. In this academy students are encouraged to fulfill their artistic desires. With the guidance of teachers, students have developed extracurricular activities that incorporate their passion for the arts such as poetry or music; which is the case of the infamous "Poetry Slam." One of the goals of V.A.P.A is to assist their students in their pursuit to better themselves as individuals and the community in which they live. Students who are part of V.A.P.A are devoted to creating not only their works of art, but also focusing on the arts at the high school level and beyond.
