Joxantonio Ormazabal (21 July 1948 – 2 May 2010) was a Spanish writer of children's literature. He was born in Zegama, Spain. He wrote several children's books and is considered one of the pillars of Basque children's literature.
Early life
Joxantonio Ormazabal was born in 1948 in the Spanish town of Zegama, Spain. At the age of 12 he joined a seminary in Saturrarán. Later, he studied at a seminary in San Sebastián. He left the seminary to study teaching. In an interview with Argia magazine on 27 September 2009, he stated, "I do not remember reading tales. My mother indeed told me stories. I remember the characters of Peru and María, but I did not grow up among books."[1]
Career
At the age of 23, Ormazabal became a teacher at a private school in Ikastola Salbatore Mitxelena in Zarautz. During that time, he worked with authors such as Anjel Lertxundi, Mariasun Landa, and Juan Martin Elexpuru. To answer his students' questions, he wrote his first book using the pen name Joxean. He found that children were motivated by his stories, so he continued running tests of his work by writing, transcribing, and distributing stories to be read the next day. While working as a teacher, Ormazabal composed the lyrics of well-known songs with Imanol Urbia, such as Astoa, Fair, and Tximeleta mountain. [1]
Ormazabal later began teaching at Alkartasuna High School in Beasain.
In 1980, Ormazabal left teaching to become an editor at Elkar Publishing House. Here he would publish his first work, Fernando Smezketarra.[2] He was responsible for the children and youth departments at Elkar Publishing House until his supposed retirement in 2009.[3] He continued his work in children's literature by editing and occasionally translating important works.
In Ormazabal's prose work, he has generally focused on humor and fantasy. However, he has also published works tackling topics such as freedom (Kaiolatik Mendira, 1986), poverty and discrimination (Kittano, 1995), relations between grandparents and grandchildren (Aitona parapentean, 2004), and ecology (Txoria zezenaren adar gainean, 1999).
Poetry played a prominent role in Ormazabal's body of work. He had been a finalist in the Euskadi Literary Prize for Children and Youth Literature in 2008 for the poem Ilunorduak eta Argilaurdenak (2007).
Some of Ormazabal's best-known works were Kaskarintxo (1983), Margolin (1983), Pernando Amezketarra (1981), and Kittano. His other writings include humorous stories, poems, word games, and tongue twisters.
Death
Ormazabal died in Zegama, Spain, on 2 May, 2010 after falling into a well. His body was found at the vent of the Oazurza tunnel on the Madrid-Irún railway line.[4]
