Mina P. Shaughnessy (1924-1978) was an educator, author and a leading figure in the field of basic writing. She was a prime advocate of open admissions during her years at City College and at the City University of New York's Instructional Resource Center during the 1960s and 1970s.

Her book "Errors and Expectations: A Guide for the Teacher of Basic Writing" is said to be a classic of the genre.

The Mina P. Shaughnessy Prize is named in her memory and is awarded for an "outstanding scholarly book in the fields of language, culture, literacy, or literature with strong application to the teaching of English."
