Patrick J. Lynch (biomedical illustrator)

Patrick James Lynch (born November 14, 1953 in Monterey, California) is an American author, artist, biomedical illustrator, and photographer. He lives in North Haven, Connecticut with his wife Susan E. Grajek.

Lynch is the Director of Web Architecture at Yale University Information Technology Services. In his 35 years with Yale University Lynch has been a medical illustrator, biomedical photographer, audiovisual producer, and for the past 20 years a designer of interactive multimedia teaching, training, and informational software and Web sites. His recent work is in information and graphic design for the Web, enterprise identity and online marketing, and user interface design for network-based systems, for clients such as Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute], and the Yale University.

Along with his co-author Sarah Horton of Dartmouth College, he has written two editions of the Web Style Guide for Yale University Press. The Web Style Guide has been published in eleven languages, and was named one of Amazon’s top 10 Web books in 1999. The complete text of the second edition of the Web Style Guide is also online.

Lynch also writes and illustrates field guides with his friend and co-author Noble S. Proctor, a renowned American birder, naturalist, and emeritus professor at Southern Connecticut State University. Their Field Guide to North Atlantic Wildlife was published by Yale University Press in 2005.

Lynch has won over 30 national awards for his medical and scientific illustrations, publications, and software design, including the 1992 Best-in-Show Award from the Health Sciences Communications Association and a Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Award of Excellence in the international INVISION Multimedia Awards during the 1990s. He has authored over 100 professional papers, magazine articles, and book chapters. He has been a consultant and invited speaker on Web design and Web communications issues to many universities, government agencies, corporations, and non-profits groups, and regularly does talks, workshops, and professional papers in biocommuications, academic computing, scientific illustration, biomedical visualization, and Web publication.
