Conservapedia is an online encyclopedia, which, according to its website, began in November 2006, as the class project for a World History class of 58 homeschooled students.[1] As of December, 2006, its home page has been received nearly five thousand hits.[2]

Conservapedia is self-described as "a much-needed alternative to Wikipedia, which suffers from anti-Christian and liberal bias" and says that it provides "FOX News-like competition" to Wikipedia, which it likens to CBS news.[2]

Conservapedia differs from other online encyclopedias in several ways. First, it is designed to be a useful resource for students and teachers, which means it prefers concise entries. Second, Conservapedia avoids the gossip and vulgarity which it says are "pervasive on Wikipedia."[3] Third, Conservapedia does not use the "B.C.E." and "C.E." replacements for "B.C." and "A.D.", which it characterizes as "anti-Christian."[2]

Conservapedia is self-described as "Christian-friendly."

Unlike British encyclopedias and unlike Wikipedia, Conservapedia considers itself to be under American editorial control and therefore favors the American spellings of words.

Another aspect of Conservapedia is noteworthy. Contributions that fit the above straightforward guidelines are respected to the maximum extent possible. Postings and edits are not usually deleted based on whim or arbitrary reasons.

Conservapedia does not deface entries with large banners like "This article is being considered for deletion" or "This article or section is in need of attention from an expert on the subject."

Conservapedia is constantly expanding and welcomes entries that conform with its simple guidelines. Nearly 100% of the entries on Conservapedia are educational, unlike other online encyclopedias that have many entries devoted to Hollywood, the music industry, or other gossipy material.

Conservapedia has entries that cannot be found in other online encyclopedias. For example, Conservapedia has an informative legal entry on the important Health Care Quality Improvement Act (HCQIA),[1] which is missing from other online encyclopedias.

With over 1700 clean and educational entries on historical, legal and economic topics, Conservapedia is an educational resource for students and teachers alike.

Already Conservapedia is one of the largest[citation needed] user-controlled free encyclopedias on the internet.
