What is RedWarn?

The recent edits patrol and warning tool (aka RedWarn) is a Javascript tool designed to aid in common moderation practices.

The tool is currently only looking for a few editors who wish to test a very early version in order so that I can collect feedback on suggested features, bugs and other issues. The current version of RedWarn should run alongside Twinkle as RedWarn does not have a complete feature set at the moment.

The current version of redwarn.js is partially minified. You can find the source code and help by contributing to the project at https://github.com/ed6767/redwarn.

Want to chat with other RedWarn users and help contribute to the project? Join our Discord Server.

RedWarn is currently receiving frequent bug fixes and feature additions - to see the latest changes, visit the BugSquasher. Please report bugs in the talk page so they can be fixed in the next release!

RedWarn - How to Install on YouTube

This video contains the instructions for the best and easiest method to install RedWarn - If you're already using Enterprisey's script installer, click "install" above to install RedWarn.

Manual method

If you do not want to enable the script installer, just add this line to your common.js file (click here to edit):

importScript("User:Ed6767/redwarn.js");

Basic Usage

Recent Changes

Head over to Special:RecentChanges and apply any filters you like. Then, click the new Redwarn patrol button in the bottom left under the filter box to begin patrolling recent edits.

Rollback buttons. From left to right:quick rollback vandalism, quick rollback blanking/removal of content, quick rollback non-constructive edits, rollback for any reason, rollback good faith, preview rollback, quick welcome. See the user guide for a less cryptic diagram.

Rollback

You can access the rollback buttons from any diff page. Refer to the userguide for more info.

Notices

To give a notice, select the new notice option at the top-right of the page, right-click on any user page link or Special:Contributions link and select "New Notice", or apply a rollback for any reason and the new notice dialog will automatically show.

To submit a notice, select a reason from the dropdown (you can type to search, note that due to a bug, at the moment pressing BACKSPACE doesn't reset the search, but typing anything else, even a single letter, will).

Then, select a notice level. It is suggested that you set this to one level higher than the highest level the user has recieved in the past month (see the icon next to the target input). If you are unsure what an icon means, hover over it with your mouse. Enter a related page and additional info if applicable and click "Send Notice" to apply the notice to the page.

  • Click the cog in the top right to change your preferences
  • Click the gavel to open the AIV report dialog
  • Click "Preview Rollback" to preview the changes a rollback is going to make
  • Quick welcome - adds the welcome template to a users talk page.
  • New message - append Wikitext to the end of a user's talk page
  • Right-click any username to access the user quick actions, such as viewing contributions and sending notices or welcoming.
  • Anywhere where there's Wikitext input, you can click the eye/pencil to switch between editing/previewing the Wikitext

Articles for Deletion, Administration and Protection Requests

These features are not yet implemented. Please continue to use Twinkle for this.

Help & Feedback

Please leave all bug reports and general feedback on the talk page. If you need any help, ask away there too. Thank you for testing Redwarn!

Testing

Bugs very much exist even if the tool is usable. I need your help and feedback to help improve RedWarn!

I would like you to test RedWarn as you would use any other tool such as Twinkle in the wild. But, please, try it out User:Sandbox for user warnings to learn the interface. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be fighting against vandalism quickly and easily. Your immediate and continued feedback would be greatly appreciated.

More Information

Browser Support

RedWarn supports the latest versions of all major Chromium, WebKit and Mozilla based browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, ext.), along with newer versions of Microsoft Edge. RedWarn is not supported on Internet Explorer or Safari.

The issue with Safari support is due to Apple's constant lack of support for some newer web APIs. While some features may work, it is unlikely RedWarn will work as expected on another browser.

ECMAScript 6 Support

RedWarn requires a browser that supports ECMAScript 6. If you cannot access a suitable modern browser then, unfortunately, RedWarn will not work.

Slower internet connections

When Wikipedia or your internet is particularly slow, RedWarn may feel slow and/or sluggish. This is normal behaviour and your actions are being processed, RedWarn is just waiting on Wikipedia. If something goes wrong, RedWarn will notify you.

Other Wikis

At this point in time, RedWarn only supports the English Wikipedia. There are plans to add support for any Wiki running MediaWiki in the future.

Attribution

While RedWarn was built from the ground up, some data (such as the reasons for speedy deletion, report reasons and others) were processed from Twinkle's source code.
