99 Neighbors is an American music group based in Burlington, Vermont. It consists of nine members, including Swank, HANKNATIVE, and Sam Paulino. Other members include Aidan Ostby, Juju, Somba, JFier, Cal Rawlings, and Shane Kaseta. Their music can be described as a blend of hip hop, rap, jazz, rock and R&B. The group has drawn frequent contrasts to rap collectives Odd Future and Brockhampton.[1] The group has a mix of singers, rappers and producers.
History
Members Aidan Ostby, Sam Paulino and HANKNATIVE graduated South Burlington High School in South Burlington, Vermont, a suburb of Burlington.[2] Sam and HANKNATIVE played in the high school's football and lacrosse teams together. Upon graduating, Sam and HANKNATIVE moved into an apartment in Burlington where they began recording and producing music full-time.[3] Juju and Somba, two other members of the group, also grew up together. Somba and Juju connected when contacted by Sam Paulino over SoundCloud about collaborating, later discovering they lived within a mile of each other. Shane Kaseta, who also went to high school with Sam, was a founding member of 99 Neighbors in 2018. He is also the group's graphic designer and photographer.[4]
Music release
On January 1, 2019, 99 Neighbors released their first studio album entitled Television. It took them two months to record their debut full-length album. Jared, another member of the group started DJing and producing with the group.[5]
In July 2019, the group signed a deal with Chance the Rapper's manager, Pat Corcoran, with Warner Records.[6]
Since then the group has released multiple singles, including Welcome to Chili's, 19, Thunder, Fake Pods, and Ripstick. [7]
In October 2019, they released a song in collaboration with brass group Brasstracks and singer/songwriter PhiloSofie, entitled F**k No. The single has over 4.5 million streams on Spotify.[8] Other notable tracks include Fake Pods and Ripstick, which have collected over 5 million combined streams on Spotify.
