Brad Walls (born August 11, 1992)[1] is an Australian aerial photographer[2]. He is based in Sydney, Australia and is best known for his aerial photography of people and architecture.[3][4] [5]
Early life
Brad Walls grew up in Sydney, Australia. He studied science at the University of Sydney before taking on his creative pursuits into product design and eventually aerial photography by a DJI drone camera.[6] In his late teens design and photography were prominent creative outlets.
Career
Before releasing his "Pools from above" series, he was interested in short form aerial videos based off his travels.[6] [7] It was on these same travels around south-east Asia that he became interested in swimming pools[4][8][9] Inspired by Annie Kellys book "Splash: The art of the Swimming Pool", he sought out to create a photographic series of the pools from an aerial vantage point.[10] In June 2020, he released the 'pools from above' collection of 20 images, garnering worldwide attention, in hopes to release a book in the coming years.[8] [11]
In November 2020, he released "Ballerine de l'air" a collection capturing an Australian Ballet artist Montanna Rubin.[12] [13] [14] [15]
He placed second in the Sport category in the Sienna drone photo awards[16] and won the sport category whilst placing second in the people category at the Inaugural Aerial Photo Awards.[17][18]
Legacy and style
Walls has been praised for documenting an alternative perspective of everyday life creating minimalist compositions focusing on symmetry, negative space and leading lines.[8][19]
Walls cites Maria Svarbova and Costas Spasthis as early influences.[6] His work has also been contextualized in reference to David Hockney and Slim Aarons[20]
