Atlantic Symphony Orchestra is a professional regional orchestra serving the Greater Boston South Shore region of Massachusetts, USA. In 2016, the ASO entered its 20th season under the musical direction of Jin Kim. The ASO is a publicly supported 501c3 cultural charity with a two-pronged mission focused on service to the general and artistic communities. The orchestra's website is www.atlanticsymphony.org.

History

Established in 1946 as the Hingham Civic Orchestra, the HCO remained an all-volunteer community orchestra until 1997, when membership voted to reorganize as the Hingham Symphony Orchestra and transition to a professionalized orchestra. The HSO became fully professional and was renamed Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in 2007[1], after a public process that confirmed the regional scope of the orchestra's mission.

From 1997–2011, the ASO performed in different locations throughout the region from Duxbury to Braintree[2]. In 2012, it was named orchestra-in-residence at Thayer Academy's Center for the Arts, in Braintree, and given a permanent performance venue for its main symphonic concerts[3]. As of 2017, other concerts and events continue to be held in various regional locations, including Glastonbury Abbey and House of Prayer, in Hingham.

Artistic Mission

While not a training orchestra, part of the ASO mission is to provide artistic development for highly qualified musicians in a professional setting. Members of the orchestra consist of both seasoned professionals and young professionals from the world’s leading conservatories, including the New England Conservatory of Music. The majority of members have been fellows at Tanglewood, Aspen, Schleswig-Holstein, and Pacific Music Festivals. ASO alumni have gone on to earn positions in major symphony orchestras around the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Civic Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Israel Philharmonic, Boston Pops, and Boston Symphony Orchestra.
