Kazuhiko Satani was born in Kyoto in 1928, died in 2008. He established Satani Gallery in 1978 and became one of the established second-generation art dealers, considering Takashi Yamamoto (Tokyo Gallery) and Kusuo Shimizu (Minami Gallery) the first generation of modern and contemporary art dealers in Japan.
Having had a strong belief that “the exhibition contents themselves embody the gallery’s mission,” he dealt with various domestic and international artists of the twentieth century and hosted numerous exhibitions. He created more than a hundred of exhibition catalogs with his own postscripts and is also an author of many books. In his book, Work of the Gallery (1988), Satani discusses gallery operation and the book was referenced by the next generation of creative minds from time to time.
He held twenty one exhibitions titled, Shuzo TakiguchiーHomage, in which he presented works by the poet Shuzo Takiguchi and his friends. It was obvious for the viewer to get a glimpse of Satani’s respect towards Takiguchi from this series of exhibitions.
