Labour took the most seats, but did not gain an overall majority

Elections to the Nithsdale District Council took place in May 1988, alongside elections to the councils of Scotland's various other districts. The number of seats and the total vote share won by each party is listed below.[1]

  Labour: 12 seats, 39.2%
  Conservative: 4 seats, 25.5%
  SLD: 0 seats, 1.7%
  SNP: 6 seats, 17.0%
  Independent: 6 seats, 16.9%
