On the 15 April 2024, in Wakeley, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney, an assailant entered the 'Christ The Good Shepherd' Assyrian church and stabbed four people, including bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel. It was the second stabbing in the city in three days, after the 2024 Bondi Junction stabbings.
Background
It was the second stabbing in Sydney in three days, after the 2024 Bondi Junction stabbings[1], although there doesn't seem to be a direct link between the two events so far.[2]
Events
The events took place in a suburb of Sydney, Wakeley.[3] An assailant reportedly entered the 'Christ The Good Shepherd' Assyrian church[2] and attacked four people with a knife, starting with a bishop, by directing himself towards the altar,[4] Mar Mari Emmanuel.[3] The event was livestreamed, since the bishop was preaching.[2] The attacker was subsequently apprehended and put into custody.[3][2][5]
Aftermath
Casualties and suites
Four people suffered non-life threatening injuries, including the bishop.[6] One of them was taken to Liverpool Hospital.[6] During the course of the events, eleven ambulances were sent to the church to respond to the emergency.[1]
Legal proceedings
The attacker was put into custody.[5][6]
