Engberg was born in Morup, Falkenberg, Halland on 1 July, 1892. He started working at his parents' farm, by taking care of their horses, from the age of eight. He inherited the farm and worked as both a farmer and a thatcher of straw roofs (before they were replaced by eternite following World War II).
