The Gaon Album Chart is a weekly and monthly chart that ranks the best-selling physical albums including mini-albums and singles in South Korea, provided by the Korea Music Content Industry Association. It started tracking sales since the very beginning of 2010 and launched in February the same year as part of the Gaon Chart.[1]

History

The album chart is part of the efforts of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Music Content Industry Association to launch a national chart for Korea similar to the Billboard charts. They were created in hopes of an organized and reliable music industry. The album chart sums up the album sales from six major distributing firms: LOEN Entertainment, Mnet Media, SM Entertainment, Sony Music Korea, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Korea.

Similar charts

The Gaon Charts were made in hopes of being as effective and similar to the Billboard charts and the Oricon charts. The Billboard equivalent to the Album Chart would be the Billboard 200, and the Oricon equivalent would be the Albums Chart.
