"Days of Girlhood" is the debut single by American Tiktok personality Dylan Mulvaney. The song was produced by Nick Monson and distributed by independent label Distrokid on March 11th, 2024.[1] The song reached #1 on the Genius lyrics chart within a week of its release.[2]
Background and Release
Dylan Mulvaney had previously gained notoriety for her Tiktok series "Days of Girlhood" where she detailed her experience with transitioning from male-to-female. Her song of the same name references this series and describes her new life as a girl. Mulvaney's song is heavily inspired by popular culture from the 2000's.[3]
Music Video
On March 13, 2024, Dylan Mulvaney released an official music video for "Days of Girlhood." The video features a strong hyperfeminine aesthetic and is decorated prominently in pink. Mulvaney appears alongside fellow transgender influencers such as Gigi Gorgeous Getty, Ve'ondre Mitchell, and Loren Grey. Later, when speaking about the song, Mulvaney promised to donate any profits to the Trevor Project.[4]
Controversy
In the coming days, many people began to criticize the song for perpetuating negative stereotypes about women. Some argued that her lyrics about boys, pills, and shopping were indicative of her not understanding girlhood. However, she soon responded, stating that her intention was simply to celebrate the girlhood she previously wasn't able to experience. She also stated that her fans should understand that she had no bad intentions. [5]
