A special interest is a term used by Autistics and the Autism community to identify individuals who have an increased interest in something. The difference in this and "hyperfixation", is where a hyperfixation is when someone has a huge interest in something that doesn't last very long (about a year or less), and a special interest is when it can most likely happen longer than a hyperfixation or even as a lifelong interest. The term "hyperfixation" is more associated by people with ADHD, and the term "special interest" more linked to Autistic identities.
