The Edwin Mellen Press is a controversial[1] Lewiston, New York-based publisher.[2] It describes itself as "a non-subsidy academic publisher of books in the humanities and social science",[3] but has been described as a vanity press[4][5] whose books "often prove to contain quite extraordinary gibberish".[1]

Criticisms

The Press has shown an unusual propensity for suing its critics. In 1993 it brought a libel suit against the magazine Lingua Franca, which it lost.[6] In 2012 it brought a similar suit for $3.5 million against McMaster University and a librarian there over a blog posting.[7] This suit has been criticized by for example the Canadian Association of University Teachers as an attempt to use legal action to silence criticism whose publication is an exercise of academic freedom.[4]
