Greenwood Academy is a secondary school situated in Dreghorn, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland.

The school opened in August 1972 and served the areas of Dreghorn, Springside, Bourtreehill,Broomlands and the outer areas of Irvine. The new school building opened in October 2008.

The primary schools in the catchment area of Greenwood Academy are:

  • Springside Primary School (Head Teacher: Mrs S Shedden)
  • Towerland Primary School (Mrs E Cumming)

However, the school does accept pupils from other schools as long as the childs parent gets in touch with the school and there are spaces available.

There are over 300 staff at Greenwood Academy including the kitchen, janitors and office secretaries. The head mistress is Mrs McGuire and the deputes are Mr Scott, Mr Brotherston, Mrs Dunker, Ms Greenless and Mr Pitt. The guidance staff that monitor the pupils from all 8 houses are : Mrs L Adamson Shewalton Mrs Boax Montgomery Mr N Barlow Overtoun Mr J Doyle Perceton Mrs P MacDougall Broomlands Mrs McNeil/Mr Ward Gailes Ms Dunstall Annick Mrs Tickner/Mrs Wylie (Thursday & Friday) Warrix

The school also has a campus police officer, PC C Curran.

Greenwood Academy has over 1600 pupils. The motto of the school is "Aye to Learn", which encourages pupils to want to learn and feel motivated. 

The reward system is merits and demerits. Merits awarded for behaving well, excellent work and staying focused on given tasks, while demerits are given for misbehaving, being off task, not handing homework in, disobeying and disrespecting the teachers and pupils around the student. The school also gives referrals to pupils who have gone beyond the demerit line.

The school has recently adopted a new 33 period timetable, this consists of certain days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) having 7 periods in a day and finishing at 3:40 and (Wednesday and Friday) having 6 periods and finishing at 2:50.

Greenwood Academy is educating pupils with the New Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) that was introduced in 2010. The new curriculum takes third year exams and removes them from the course. It also changes the qualification levels, making Credit, Foundation and General into National Level 4, 5 or 6. The new curriculum also changes the marking system for teachers taking the normal letter marking scheme and turning it to numbers.
