Instrument Flight Rules means, that the pilot of a plane takes the bearing of his plane from the instruments, mostly the artificial horizon or vertical gyro. Separation from other planes is done by ATC that use radar and VHF-Voice-Radio for this purpose. IFR-flight are more weather independent than VFR flight.
