It was formerly known as Arch Bridge, named for the stone bridge crossing Shickshinny Creek. Upon the establishment of the post office the area was renamed Koonsville after William Koons, who both lived there and was the first postmaster.[2]

In 1850 William Koons moved to the area and occupied the Austin family Inn. Koons was survived by B.D. Koons, who was not only a charter member of Shickshinny but also one of the first officers. [3]

According to locals there are approximately 5 houses in and 1 is a taxidermist. There is also a gas station, however it is closed.
