The [[Westminster parliament]] approved plans to construct a hydroelectric plant on the Clyde in 1924<ref name=SP-tech /> and construction began in 1926. Construction of Bonnington Power Station was completed in 1926, followed by Stonebyres Power Station which was completed in 1927. The scheme remained a public asset for several decades, until the privatisation of the energy industry in the 1980s. It is currently owned by [[Scottish Power]].
