Background

Speculation of the album started on February 24, 2019, when Swift posted a photo of seven palm trees to her Instagram account,[1] which she later confirmed was the day she finished the album,[2] and again on April 13, when Swift released a countdown on her official website, counting down to midnight on April 26.[3] At midnight, Swift released the album's lead single, "Me!" featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco, along with its accompanying music video.[4] Swift told fans to look in the video carefully to find hints about the album title. Many fans pointed out that at one point in the video, a sign saying Lover was seen at the top of a building in the background.[5] On June 13, 2019, Swift confirmed this speculation in a livestream on Instagram.[6] Swift also announced that the album's second single, "You Need to Calm Down", would be released the next day, June 14, followed by its music video on June 17.[7] Furthermore, Swift announced that the numbers of the release date (eight, two, and three) add up to 13, Swift's favorite number.[7] During Swift's Instagram live stream on June 13, 2019, she described the album as a romantic one, stating that it was "not just simply thematically, like it's all love songs or something. The idea of something being romantic, it doesn't have to be a happy song. You can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through things in your life... it just looks at those things through a romantic gaze."[6]

As of July 2019, Lover is the most pre-ordered album by a female artist in its first day on Apple Music, totaling more than 178,600 pre-adds worldwide on the platform.[8][9] Lover also the holds the record for most pre-added pop album in its first day worldwide, also on Apple Music.[10]

Artwork and packaging

The album cover photo was shot by 24-year old Valheria Rocha, a Colombian artist.[11]

There will be four deluxe versions of the album, all with different bonus content, which will be available at Target in the US, and on her official website globally upon album release. Some of the content will include a lyric book, a CD of the standard album, a poster, a collection of content, lyrics, and photos, and a blank journal, as well as two bonus audio memos.[12][13]

Singles

The song "Me!" featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco serves as the album's lead single. It was released along with its accompanying music video on April 26, 2019.[4] The lyric video was released on May 1. The song broke numerous records, including the biggest single-week jump on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in its history.[14] It peaked at number two in the United States and in Canada,[14] while it debuted and peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.[15]

The second single, "You Need to Calm Down", was announced during Swift's album release livestream on Instagram on June 13, 2019, and was released on June 14, along with the lyric video.[6] The accompanying music video, which was released on June 17,[16] had special appearances from a variety of guests, most of whom are part of the LGBTQ+ community, including Ellen DeGeneres and RuPaul.[9][17] It debuted and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

Though a third song, The Archer, was released before the album came out, Swift explained on an Instagram Live that the song would not be a single and therefore would not get a music video. She went on to explain that the video showcased a side of the album that fans had not yet seen from the previous singles.

Promotional singles

No promotional singles have been released as of July 24, 2019. While "The Archer" was released on July 24, Swift explained in her Live Instagram video to her followers that the song would not be a single, and it is simply a song that she wanted fans to hear beford the album came out to showcase a different side of the album that had not be shown in You Need To Calm Down or ME! However, Swift revealed that she was on set filming a music video on July 24. The video's respective single is expected to be released in the upcoming weeks before the album comes out on August 23.

Track listing

The standard album is set to have 18 tracks, more than any of her six previous studio albums. The Target deluxe editions are set to feature two songwriting audio memos from Swift. The album run time is yet to be announced.[6][18][19][20]
