Judge Maria Lourdes Afiuni is a Venezuelan judge. She is 46 and has been eight years on the bench.

She was arrested in December 2009 after ordering the release of Eligio Cedeño, a banker who was arrested for illegal foreign exchange transactions but according to his lawyer was for political reasons. He was held in pre-trial detention for three years with repeated delays due to prosecutors failing to appear at hearings. Chavez called the judge a "bandit," applauded her arrest and said she should be put away in prison for 30 years[1]. The Caracas bar association said that the judge's decision to free Cedeño was in line with the law; the government said it was improper to release him without prosecutors present at the hearing.[2]

In December 2009 three independent human rights experts of the United Nations' Working Group on Arbitrary Detention called for her immediate and unconditional release[3][4].

Maria Lourdes Afiuni was incarcerated on 17 December at the National Institute of Feminine Orientation, a prison for women on the outskirts of Caracas.[5][6] According to her lawyer, she is imprisoned with inmates that she has sent there and her life could therefore be in danger.[7] Afiuni's brother appealed to president Chavez for better treatment of his sister.[8][9]
