Matachewan First Nation
A northern Ojibwa (Mushkegowuk or Swampy People) First Nation located in the Canadian province of Ontario, near the Quebec border and south of James Bay.
History
They are likely descendant from northern Ojibwa's (Swampy People) and southern Ojibwa's who migrated to the north from more southerly locations. They did not take treaty until the 1905 Treaty 9 was signed. They were obviously hostile towards the whites and wanted to avoid them for many reasons. Among them, plagues and the knowledge of knowing that the whites could not be trusted. Their land was and still is, not suited for agriculture. However, the whites discovered metals in their teritory and commenced to invade. Thus, the 1905 treaty. The Matachewan First Nation has over 640 citizens.
