A Red Mage refers to a fictional type or order of wizards, usually branching out in its own type of School of magic, but it's mostly just limited Black and White Spells.

Red Mage in Final Fantasy games

Normally, Red Mages in Final Fantasy use the limited spells of both Black Mages and White Mages. They also have the combat abilities near to a Warrior but are not as good at any one ability as are any of the other classes. In general, they are only able to cast lower-level spells and not necessarily every one of those; essentially, jack of all trades, master of none.

Traditionally, Red Mages are distinguishable from other classes for wearing a distinct red hat with a white feather. Other articles of clothing vary from game to game, though a red cape is common. In the first game it was thought they were wearing a mask covering their mouth but it's actually part of their cape.

Final Fantasy I

--Red Mage--
The Red Mage can learn both Black and White Magic spells, up to Level 5, although some spells are prohibited, and he/she doesn't get as much MP to cast them. The Red Mage is by the best fighter of the spellcasters, and can use a wide variety of weapons and armors. The Red Mage makes a good alternative to the Black Mage, especially in normal mode.

--Red Wizard--
The Red Wizard enjoys a slightly expanded spell list (the Red Wizard can learn spells up to Level 7), and can use a few weapons and armors that are prohibited for the Red Mage.

--Spells available--

Final Fantasy III

This time around, they can only cast up to Level 5 of Black/White Magic. While incredibly powerful early in the game, this Red Mage's spellcasting limitations prove difficult for the Class to overcome later in the game. The Final Dungeons require specialization and this Red Mage is the ultimate general purpose Job.

--Spells available--
Level 1: Fire, Blizzard, Sleep, Cure, Poisona, and Sight.
Level 2: Thunder, Poison, Blind, Aero, Toad, and Mini.
Level 3: Fira, Blizzara, Thundara, Cura, Teleport, and Blindna.
Level 4: Blizzaga, Break, Shade, Libra, Confuse, and Silence.
Level 5: Thundaga, Raze, Erase, Curaga, Raise, and Protect.

Final Fantasy V

In this game, the Red Mage has returned, this time as a class granted by the second crystal. This game also brought about the creation of their trademark "Doublecast" skill (called Redx2 here), which would appear frequently in subsequent Final Fantasy games, even when the "Red Mage" itself was absent, expanding their powerful reputation.

--Spells available--
Level 1: Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Cure, Poisona, and Scan.
Level 2: Sleep, Poison, Toad, Silence, Protect, and Mini.
Level 3: Fira, Blizzara, Thundara, Cura, Life, and Confuse.

Final Fantasy IX

In Final Fantasy IX, Red Mages could be found in various towns, but existed in the game for nothing more than dialogue. They were found in: Alexandria, Lindblum, and Daguerro. Some were called "Adventurer"s, but they were also Red Mages.

Final Fantasy XI

In the MMORPG incarnation of the series, the Red Mage is a mage/melee hybrid class with particular aptitude for enhancing and enfeebling magic. Red Mages may equip a variety of weapons from swords and daggers for melee damage to wands and staves for stat bonuses. Spells exclusive to the Red Mage include Refresh, which regenerates an affected character’s MP, and Dispel, which removes a beneficial status effect from an enemy. Red Mage abilities include Convert, which swaps current HP and MP pools; traits include Fast Cast, which reduces the casting time of a spell and cooldown timer. The Red Mage's 2-hour ability, Chainspell, allows for instant casting of spells without the normal cooldown period. Due to their jack-of-all-trades nature and their access to several defense-reducing and -absorbing spells, Red Mages at high levels are one of the few classes in the game capable of soloing monsters in their own range of level and strength.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Mainly a Viera Job Class, the Red Mages in here are amazing. If you created one, then had her use Summoner abilities, not only would you have made a Red Summoner, but you'll have a nearly invincible character. They're still great by themselves, however. What they can equip are:
Rapier
Ribbon
Hat
Clothes
Robes

--A-Abilities--
Barrier
Blizzard
Cure
Doublecast
Fire
Poison
Sleep
Thunder

--R-Abilities--
Catch

--S-Abilities--
Mag Pow+

--C-Abilities--
Red Combo
