John-Roger's MSIA has been identified as a cult both by former members and by the Cult Awareness and Information Center. A 1988 People Magazine artcle included the following:
"Those who complied with J-R's sexual advances were reportedly promoted to positions of authority and praised for their spiritual qualities. Victor Toso, 34, now living in Minneapolis and engaged to be married, says he was not homosexual but that he consented to J-R's requests for sex because he feared being kicked off the MSIA staff. "Whenever we fell out of line, having another sexual encounter with him was sort of required to seal us back in the brotherhood," says Toso."

Roger Delano Hinkins (born 24 September 1934), usually known as John-Roger, is an American author, public speaker and founder of New Age spiritual and self-help organizations.

John-Roger is the author of over 55 books including four Bestsellers and a NY Times #1 Bestseller [1]. His most recent books are 'The Rest of Your Life' (2007), 'Timeless Wisdoms: Volume One' (2008) and 'Timeless Wisdoms: Volume Two' (2008). He has given more than 6000 seminars over the last forty years, most of which have been recorded either in audio or video format by NOW Productions. John-Roger also produces his own national cable TV show That Which Is, and has appeared on other television and radio programs including CNN's Larry King Live, The Roseanne Show, and Politically Incorrect.

In 1968, John-Roger founded the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA), and incorporated it as a church in 1971 [1] MSIA is a nondenominational and ecumenical church whose purpose is to "teach Soul Transcendence, which is becoming aware of yourself as a Soul and as one with God, not as a theory, but as a living reality." [2] MSIA currently has participants in more than 32 countries, with its largest followingin the US, Australia, Colombia, Brazil and Nigeria respectively, [3]

John-Roger has traveled extensively leading groups of up to 150 people on spiritual retreats know as Peace Awareness Trainings all over the world. His journeys have taken him to such places as the former USSR, Yugoslavia, China, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and throughout Africa, South America, North America, Australia and across Europe. [4]

John-Roger has founded many non-profit organizations. He is the founder and chancellor of the University of Santa Monica (USM), an unaccredited institution offering master's degrees in Spiritual Psychology and Consciousness, Health & Healing and a doctoral degree in Spiritual Pschology. [5] He is also the founder and president of Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy (PTS), which offers undergraduate courses, workshops, retreats, and master's and doctorate programs in Spiritual Science; its headquarters is home to Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Insight Seminars [6] and is Founder and President of both the Institute for Individual & World Peace (IIWP) [7] and the Heartfelt Foundation. [8]

John-Roger is often referred to by friends and established students as "J-R". The most prominent public figure to have worked with him, with varying levels of dedication since the 1970s, is Arianna Huffington.[9][10] Other notable students of John-Roger are the Beach Boys’ Carl Wilson, model / actress Jaime King, author / management expert David Allen and actor Jsu Garcia. MSIA's current spiritual director, John Morton, author of You Are the Blessings, is an intermittent contributor to The Huffington Post.[11]

Most recently John-Roger co-wrote and co-produced a film with long time student and close friend Jsu Garcia. The film Spiritual Warriors is inspired by one of John-Roger's bestselling books - 'Spiritual Warrior - The Art of Spiritual Living'.[12]

Biography

Born to a Mormon family in Rains, Utah on on September 24, 1934, Hinkins was raised in Utah where in 1958 he received Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Utah before moving to San Francisco to work as an insurance claims adjustor. In 1960 he received his Secondary teaching credential as well other credentials such as a California "secondary life teaching credential" and post-graduate work at University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California and California State University, Los Angeles. He then began teaching English at Rosemead High School in a suburb of Los Angeles. [13]

In late 1963 John-Roger underwent gall-bladder surgery and a possible sedative overdose, which led to a nine-day coma and near-death experience in which he claimed to have been overshadowed by a "being" who called himself "John" and "The Beloved." After the operation Hinkins began to refer to himself as John-Roger.

Around this time Hinkins explored a variety of different spiritual teachings, including Eckankar, and there has been speculation regarding his level of involvement with this group. Religious scholar James R. Lewis reported on this matter in a book he published about John-Roger and the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, that while John-Roger acknowledges that he studied with Eckankar, he was not formally initiated into the group. About five years after his postcoma realization, Hinkins began to hold gatherings as an independent spiritual teacher in homes of friends in initially in Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks, and then spreading across Southern California until the demand was such that he was doing five seminars a week at different homes in different cities. During this time he continued working as a high school English teacher until 1971, in which year the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness was formally incorporated.[13]

In 1974 MSIA purchased 3500 West Adams Blvd in Los Angeles, California, informally called Prana, and now publicly known as “Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens’. This building is the Global Head Quarters for the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness and Peace Theological Seminary and College of Philosophy. Since 1974 until current day, students of MSIA have lived at ‘Prana’ as part of the Seminary program offered by Peace Theological Seminary and College of Philosophy .[14]

John-Roger has met with many influential people all around the world, including Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Mother Theresa. John-Roger received the Peacemaker of the Year award (World Art Expressions) in 2000. [15]

Media and Controversy

During the late 80s and early 90s, John-Roger was the subject of a hate campaign from publications such as People magazine, Playboy, the Los Angeles Times and Vanity Fair. While all claims and allegations remain unproven and unsubstantiated, being a nontraditional religion, MSIA and John-Roger was, branded by the media, as a cult.[13],

The media attention drew the interest of an independent religious scholar Professor James R. Lewis. As the Chairperson of the Department of Religious Studies at the World University of America, and with his extensive background in the academic study of religion and as a world-recognized authority on controversial religious movements, Lewis conducted a full independent study upon John-Roger and the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness. His complete findings are published in the book ‘Seeking the Light: Uncovering the truth about the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness and its Founder John-Roger’, (1998) ISBN 0-914829-42-4.

From this intensive study of John-Roger and MSIA, which included free and unlimited access to MSIA’s recordings, study of its materials and participation in workshops, trainings and events, Lewis found that because of the absence of an external system of rules, membership or participation requirements and practices that he could not rationalize or perceive how MSIA could be classified as a ‘cult’ in the destructive and harmful sense it had been branded[13].
