Generationally, Tatjana Ilic belongs to a small group of Serbian artists who have developed and shaped their work throughout the 1990s and 2000s in Belgrade, followed by several years at the Academy in Düsseldorf, in the art world of Germany and occasionally in the art context of Italy. Tatjana Ilic explored her own artistic language and acquired valuable knowledge in both, the international class of professor Janis Kounellis, the prominent Art Prover artist, and vibrant, research based, working atmosphere of the Düsseldorf Academy, which during the 90s was the epicenter of sublimation of various cultures as well as the heritage of conceptual arts and fluxus of Joseph Beuys in 60s and 70s.
Tatjana Ilic belongs to a small group of Serbian artists who have developed and shaped their work throughout the 1990s and 2000s in Belgrade. Tatjana Ilic studied under professor Janis Kounellis, the prominent Art Prover artist.
Using the experimental approach, she articulates her thoughts through drawings, procedural blue prints, works and performances, while nourishing the aesthetics of spiritual existence, their visual document in form of photographs, which in later phases result in the exhibition of integral, 3D, spatial work.
<br />
The artwork of this artist outbreaks from her awareness of the heritage of 20th century`s Avantguard and Neoavantguard movements and the open questions about the future of contemporary art, the goals of modern art itself, achievements of earlier epochs and their best representatives according to Tatjana Ilic.
Art historian, Jesa Denegi, in his article published in 2004 in the catalogue for her exhibition “Good Day, Senor Goya” says: “In the art biography of Tatjana Ilic it is written that she has completed art studies at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf in the class of Janis Kunelis. However, that data, no matter how important for her development, is only an introduction in her work so far, as an independent and mature authorial personality. Naturally, the school in which artists such as Joseph Beuys, Jannis Kounellis and Klaus Rinke were once teaching had a strong influence on the students to understand art as a continuous research and to strive to reveal their own personal characteristics. And this is exactly the apprehension of art that Tatjana Ilic carried from her studies. But all of that would not be enough, had this artist through her earlier and especially later artworks – performances, activities and works in different media, not succeed to establish and achieve her own rather unusual artistic ideas. Writing about Tatjana Ilic, Kunelis as the more experienced artist and her mentor, noticed some of the characteristics of his young associate: her art remains “on the edge of the possible”, “lives from the divine moments” and possesses “theatricality that eliminates literal narration”. It is hardly possible to add any substantial comment to these highly suggestive statements. We can only confirm these statements by observing the artwork of Tatjana Ilic that has mostly taken place in the German contemporary art scene. Therefore her work is not well known or duly valued in our surrounding. By the character of her art techniques, Tatjana Ilic authentically carries the heritance of “New Art” of 60s and 70s. The artists of “New Art” speak directly, through the body language in real time and space of their existence preserving the high level of mental and conceptual virtues in the realization of their ideas.
<br />
In his article published in 2008 in ArtFama magazine for contemporary art scene, named “Intro of discussion Tanja Ilic verse Ilija Soskic / About platforms “, art historian Slavko Timotijevic, wrote about Tanja Ilic`s work after she returned to Belgrade … Tanja Ilic empirically explores and recognizes specific art position that is even in this surrounding absolutely clear and, in the attempt to define it, she introduces new concept to art. That concept -“Concept of the Position of Active Art Margin” is soon becoming widely accepted by local and international artists, critics, and philosophers of various generations. In 2007 she artistically wrote and published the “Manifest of Active Art Margin” as a result of her understanding of important historical facts and circumstances as well as certain generational compatibilities.
Tatjana Ilic is a protagonist of the art project “Frequencies” and one of the founders of artistic association Faust Manifest.
