Northern Cyprus is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Cyprus and (the Turkish Republic of) Northern Cyprus. The latter declared independence on 15 November 1983, but the United Nations and many international organisations do not accept this declaration of independence and recognise it as territory of Cyprus. Cyprus also claims it as part of its own sovereign territory. Northern Cyprus' independence is not recognised by any UN state except Turkey.
