"The Return of Kraven"

"The Return of Kraven" is the fourth episode from the fourth season of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, also marking the forty-fifth episode, originally airing on February 22, 1997. [1] The episode introduces Calypso to the series, though the character had previously been developed as Dr. Mariah Crawford. It also marks the characters first appearance in a Spider-Man cartoon. [2]

Plot

Spider-Man teams with the Black Cat in an attempt to confront Kraven the Hunter. After Kraven eludes the two heroes, there are various reports of attacks. Debra Whitman decides to investigate and she, Black Cat, Flash Thompson, and Dr. Curt Connors hunt for clues, and succeed in identifying the DNA as female. After Kraven fails to elude Spider-Man, he explains to the wall-crawler that he is in fact not responsible for the attacks, and that he was forced to give his love interest, Dr. Mariah Crawford, the same serum that transformed him into Kraven the Hunter, after she was attacked whilst in Africa. Dr. Connors is able to create a formula that will cure Mariah, and Spider-Man, Black Cat and Kraven are able to restrain her in order for her to take the serum. The formula doesn't, however, completely cure her and she decides to stay in her current form with Kraven.

Production

The episode developed Calypso's character to have powers alike to those of Kraven's, whilst in the comics, the character develops witch-like powers, as well as being Kraven's mistress. [2] The episode was the last in which featured Linda Gary providing the voice for Aunt May, the character would later be cast as Julie Bennett, who provided her voice in a previous episode due to Gary's absence. [3][4]

Reception

The episode has been reviewed to have been somewhat unwelcome, however enjoyable. It has been considered that Kraven's return in this episode wasn't necessary, as he had already made a previous return.
