John Nazarian is the youngest of two children and the only adopted of the two. Nazarian’s father gave him the ‘boot’ at around 16 and he was sent to California to live with his sister and her family. John Nazarian lived with his sister and her family and graduated from William S Hart High School in Newhall, California Nazarian entered the United States Navy out of High School; where he served four years and received an honorable discharged.

Early Career
Upon returning from the Navy Nazarian worked as an apprentice embalmer with Mater Mortuary in Alhambra California, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Groman, and Malinow & Silvermann Mortuaries.

It was during the early 70’s at a clandestine meeting with Les Morgan, a gay community activist, and with the then Sheriff of San Francisco, Richard Hongisto. Nazarian was asked to be the first openly gay law enforcement officer in the United States with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department. At that time Nazarian refused, however Nazarian would in deed join the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department but it would be much later. Nazarian did become good friends with Richard Hongisto in Richard’s later years, right up to Richard’s sudden death in November 2004.

In 1969 or 1970 Nazarian began his career in law enforcement as a student worker / Sheriffs Explorer under the tutelage of Sgt. Bob Warford and Deputy Arthur E. Pelino, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, of the old Newhall Station.

In late 70’s and early 80’s Nazarian became a prison guard with the California Department of Corrections He was assigned to the California Institution for Women in Frontera, California. During his tenure there he met and worked with Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten , all part of the Manson Family. Susan Atkins was married on September 9, 1981 to Donald Lee Laisure, a Texan claiming to be a multi-millionaire who would use his resources to help secure her freedom, but Atkins had the marriage annulled in 1982 when it was revealed that many of his claims were false. Nazarian was one of five people that attended the wedding. Nazarian worked under the administration of Sylvia J. Johnson, Superintendent and Don Williams the Deputy Superintendent. John worked many different assignments, leaving while assigned to the Administration department, (ADM) of the prison.

Shortly after leaving California Department of Corrections in the late 80’s Nazarian went to work for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, under Sheriff Michael Hennessey. Nazarian because of his previous diversity in worked assignments in other law enforcement jobs; worked different assignments, including patrol, etc. While assigned to the Sheriffs Department Nazarian’s best memories were of working with Michael Marcum one of the most interesting men Nazarian has ever met.

Nazarian entered into the retail jewelry business specializing in gold and diamond and did well enough to become semi retired. It was while living in the Central Valley of California. Nazarian was asked to join a local police department for the, City of Mendota, California. Chief Joseph Trejo was one of the highest ranking Hispanic officers in California with the Fresno Police Department , upon the death of the then Chief of Police of the Mendota Police. Joesph Trejo became the chief of police. The City of Mendota was having a terrible gang problem Trejo recruited Nazarian to handle the juvenile division In a short time Nazarian and the multi jurisdiction task force with other officers had many members of the gangs sent to state prison. Chief Trejo died in office and the City Administrator chose to dis-band the entire Police Department and to contract with the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

Career
Nazarian got his start as a private investigator at the urging of Gary Lieberman, Esq. Mr. Lieberman is a very successful lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area. Nazarian met Mr. Lieberman after Nazarian filed a lawsuit to see that the building he had in escrow went through. This was an incredible Apartment Complex on the water off The Great Highway in San Francisco. Well, as Nazarian often tells the story in interviews, Gary Lieberman, kicked John’s lawyers --- in Court and got the entire purchase tossed out on its ear. Nazarian was so upset that right after the decision, he walked over to Mr. Lieberman and asked for his card and turned and fired his lawyer. It was from that very moment, Mr. Nazarian and Gary Lieberman would become friends and remain so till this very day. Gary Lieberman gave John his very first assignment and paid John $45.00 dollars an hour.

Nazarian began his career as a private investigator working for the San Francisco Courts getting appointed cases for $27.00 an hour. Nazarian opened his first office in San Francisco with the help of Seymour Jaron, making an average of $45.00 per hour. In investigative pieces written about Nazarian as to why he closed his first agency in San Francisco there appears to be a different version then the one Nazarian shares. It did not take long for Nazarian to figure out the real money was in Beverly Hills. Following the money John moved his office to Los Angeles. Armand Keosian, Esq. gave Nazarian an incredible office with a view of a golf course in his Century City, Los Angeles Suite on the Avenue of the Stars which was critical to Nazarian’s success in the first days of Nazarian’s practice. Nazarian also states that Sorrell Trope of Trope and Trope in Los Angeles Sorrell Trope gave Nazarian advice on the direction he was going, and it was sage advice at that.

On John J. Nazarian’s business site, Nazarian & Associates, Nazarian explains the services they offer; “Premarital/Spousal Deceit, Extortion/Blackmail, Executive Protection, Estate Protection, Promiscuous Relationships, Locating Lost Individuals, Forensic Document Examination, Elder Abuse/Scams, Gypsy Scams, All Types of Fraud, Suspicious Deaths, Jewelry Theft, Sexual Predators, Child Abduction, Facilitator”. Nazarian & Associates states that; “In addition to Investigations, we also provide Security and Protection services for clients who need a physical presence for many different issues. Mr. Nazarian and his team are also highly respected for directing clients as to securing their homes, places of business, and their travel for personal appearances, vacations, and loved ones to and from work or school.”

The basic retainer fee of $20,000.00 and Nazarian’s normal rate is $400.00 an hour plus expenses; with fees like this it is no wonder that Nazarian’s company deals primarily with the rich and famous. Nazarian’s agency says that they; “ -- unfortunately we are not for everyone. We operate as a "boutique" agency, which allows us to offer very personalized service to our clients. When you want the very best for yourself or your client in investigations or security -- and can afford it -- call Nazarian & Associates. Let us make your problem our problem.”

Nazarian went back to school after the Navy and besides the invaluable training he had during his law enforcement career he also holds two degrees, one in Administration of Justice and one in Criminology.

Almost all of John J. Nazarian’s clients have their anonymity protected by his firm they take pride that many of the investigations are sensitive and never make it to local or national media due to their exhaustive efforts to protect their clients' privacy. Some cases do make national and international news at the client’s request, like the case of Gombert “Mike” Yepremyan, Lauren Ann Freeman and Andrea Thompson. There are certain high profile clients that have given Nazarian & Associates permission to list them as clients. These include; Pauley Perrette, star of NCIS; Oscar de la_Hoya, Vin Diesel, Steven Bochco, Producer of NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues; Les Moonves, Chairman of CBS/Viacom; Michelle Phillips, actress and singer; Andrea Thompson, star of NYPD Blue and 24; Jose Eber, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin and Doris Duke.

Nazarian accomplished what few private investigators are able to do, not only is he a celebrity private investigator and security expert for the rich and famous, but he has become a celebrity in his own right. Nothing shows that better than the highlighted client list often like the saga of Anna Nicole Smith there are multiple overlapping cases.

On September 4, 2007, Rita Cosby released a book about Anna Nicole Smith, Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith's Death. The book details the circumstances around the death of the model in 2007. Howard K. Stern filed a $60 million libel suit against Cosby and her publisher in October 2007. The book was a New York Times bestseller. In August 2009 federal judge Denny Chin ruled that "Cosby's actions are extremely troubling, and suggest that she was attempting to obstruct justice by tampering with witnesses" and allowed most of Stern's $60 million lawsuit against Cosby to proceed. Three months later the lawsuit was withdrawn as settled but no information has been released on the terms of this out-of-court settlement.
