Classification by system
Planting stock is raised under a variety of systems, the most common growing systems for woody plants are bareroot, containers, and ball & burlap (cite1). Manuals specifically for the production of bareroot[1] and containerized[2] nursery stock are valuable resources for the nursery manager. In North America, the American Standard for Nursery Stock (ANSI Z.60.1) and the Canadian nursery stock standard set specifications that determine what category nursery plant material belongs. The standards relate to plant size, plant calliper in relation to height, and root ball size.
