  1. ^ East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been occupied by Israel since 1967. The West Bank (including East Jerusalem) was occupied by Jordan and the Gaza Strip was occupied by Egypt from 1948 until the 1967 occupation by Israel.[1] The State of Palestine, which claims these territories, did not declare its independence until 1988. See Palestinian Declaration of Independence. The State of Palestine is, as of November 2015, recognised by 136 countries and is a non-member observer state at the United Nations.[2]
