History

Velva was officially founded in 1883 by August Peterson, a Swedish immigrant. Inheriting a tract of land from his brother, Peterson's property grew to become the town of Velva. Peterson sold 40 acres to the railroad, then sold additional acres to the city. From there, the town grew into what it is today.

Business

The city of Velva is a strong supporter of growth in its own local economy. Recent companies that have moved to the town, such as a software development firm, have maintained a quality of life in the city that many towns of comparable size can only aspire to attain. Velva is a city on the grow, housing many people who commute to nearby Minot.

To compensate this growth, as well as the influx of people from nearby cities, work has recently finished on the Sunset First Addition, a new residential development located near the school.

Education

All grades are contained in the same school. Velva Public School has approximately 475 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12. Services offered by the Velva School District include special education, a counselor on sight and a highly-qualified teaching staff. Optional courses available to students in grades 7-12 include Spanish II, art, creative writing, physics, chemistry, technology and advanced math classes.
