Martin Luther King Day Editathon Vanderbilt Libraries are hosting a Staff Service Day Editathon on January 18,2021. Date and time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., CST on Monday, January 18th. Sign up: Outreach Dashboard Wikidata: Items and Map MLK Day of Service Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. VU Libraries Project Starting in 2021, Vanderbilt will recognize MLK Day as a paid staff holiday. According to Chancellor Diermeier, providing "dedicated time off for the entire Vanderbilt community to commemorate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King is one of many steps the university is taking to build a more inclusive and welcoming community. The values to which Dr. King dedicated his life—including peace, equality and justice—are the foundation for genuine and impactful change on our campus and around the world.” To honor the intent of the day, the LAC is organizing a voluntary service project for library staff to participate in with your library colleagues. Given the current COVID environment, we are proposing a virtual Wikimedia Editathon to compile information about Nashville area social justice organizations. Please note that participation in this event is purely voluntary and not required of any staff member. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation.
