Wikipedia:Project MUSE/Nav Project MUSE is an online database of more than 600 academic journals and 36,000 ebooks in the humanities and social sciences. The content in Project MUSE represents over 200 university presses and scholarly societies globally. For more details, see their website (and their list of Book publishers and Journals).

Project MUSE is offering 200 free accounts to all its published content to help write Wikipedia content related to a wide variety of topics. Wikipedia editors may apply for access to Project MUSE; their account will be valid for a period of one year.

Note that Project MUSE supports alumni access to both its book and journal content. Please check if alumni access applies to you. MUSE also supports a number of Shibboleth federations, including the U.S.

Requirements

• You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia; (see Special:Preferences)
• You have a Wikipedia account that is a minimum of 1 year old
• You have made a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
• You are active in content generation, research, and/or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

Expectations

Approved editors may:

• Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
• Electronically save portions of restricted content
• Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
• Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the Project MUSE website they are accessing

Approved editors will not

• Share their account logins or passwords with others, or sell their access to other parties
• Mass scrape or mass download content on Project MUSE
• Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
• Mine data or content without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles

Private and confidential information

• You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate.
• By applying, you understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, The Wikipedia Library, and Project MUSE. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or Project MUSE), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

Citation

• Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking a Project MUSE source, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
• Editors should not provide bare links to non-free Project MUSE pages
• Editors should note "(subscription required)" in the citation (either through the "|subscription = " variable in {{cite web}} or {{subscription required}}), where appropriate)
• Editors should use consistent citations, preferably either in the TWL recommended Citation below, or one of the support citation styles supported by MUSE (MLA, APA, Chicago).

Further participation

Here are a few ways you could help The Wikipedia Library effectively leverage this partnership:

• Add {{Wikipedia:Project MUSE/Userbox}} to your user boxes if you have access to this database. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.
• TWL is interested in having guest bloggers. Guest blogging gives the opportunity for both The Wikipedia Library and Project MUSE to profile our partnership, and it gives the guest bloggers a new platform to share their editing experience with others (which is good for the Wikimedia community).

1. Jefferyseow (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I edit entries related to 19th Century British Malaya (the Federated Malay States, Unfederated Malay States, and the Straits Settlements, especially Penang and Singapore). Sources are hard to find and access to MUSE would help.

I have some experience with it in an academic setting and would be thrilled to use it, especially in articles on the performing arts.
