Yungay District

The District of Yungay is born with the Republic the 28 of July of 1821 conforming the party of Huaylas. At beginnings of the rising Republic, Yungay decidedly supported to the liberating forces of Simón Bolivar, giving feeding, dresses and armament to the Voltigeros regiments and Pichincha quartered in Yungay to the control of Don Antonio Jose de Sucre, who after several months of preparation, left to fight in Junín and Ayacucho.

The Gorge of rio Ancash, was scene of the battle of carried out Yungay the 20 of January of 1839 in that Peruvian-Chilean dissolved to the Peru-Bolivia Confederation with the victory of the United Army Restaurador. It was as a result of this battle that Yungay lent the name of Ancash to the present Department.

Other important events were: The convent of Santo Domingo de Yungay, founded by the Father Domingo of Santo Tomás the 4 of August of 1540 and elevated to the category in 1579; the first catastrophe of origin glacier, that registers the History of Ancash happened the 6 of January of 1725 to concecuencia of a terrible earthquake, disappearing the town of Ancash; the conversion in Province of Yungay occurred the 28 of October 1904 with Law 006.
