Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth is a book by Iranian-American writer and scholar Reza Aslan. It is an historical account of the life of Jesus and analyzes the various religious perspectives on Jesus as well as the creation of Christianity.[1]
Promotion
During an interview on Fox News by Lauren Green, Green frequently interjected, quoting critics who questioned Aslan's credibility as an author of such a work as Aslan is a prominent Muslim.[2] Aslan noted he was "a scholar of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament, and [was fluent] in biblical Greek, [and] has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, [and that he] also just happens to be a Muslim."[3] The interview was criticized immediately after gaining notoriety on the Internet after a post on BuzzFeed headlined "Is This The Most Embarrassing Interview Fox News Has Ever Done?"[4][5]
Zaki Hasan of the Huffington Post said "by saying it would be akin to a Democrat writing about Reagan, it offers a clear window into the binary, yin or yang mindset that governs [Green's] thinking."[2] The Atlantic noted that the book debuted at the second spot on The New York Times Best Seller list after the interview, a significant increase in sales.[3]
Reviews
The scholar Anthony Le Donne reviewed the book and wrote that it was "depressing to read" and "could only have been written by someone entirely unaware of the most recent and widely respected scholarship on Second Temple Judaism."[6]
