Season 1889–90 was the 17th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at a national level, entering the Scottish Cup for the 17th time.

Overview

Despite managing to negotiate tough ties against their local rivals, Vale of Leven and Renton, Dumbarton were disappointingly knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the third round stage by 3rd LRV, after a replay.[1]

There was however a good deal of success during the season as first Dumbarton retained the Dumbartonshire Cup by beating Vale of Leven in the final.

Then the Greenock Charity Cup came to Boghead, as hosts Morton were dispatched in the final.

There was also an invitation by United Abstainers F.C. to compete in their Gold Cup competition and Dumbarton just failed to take home this trophy as they lost in the final to Third Lanark after a drawn game.

A busy season saw 28 'other' matches played, including home and away fixtures against neighbours, Renton and East of Scotland Shield holders, Hearts, and a 3 match north of Scotland tour during the New Year holidays. There were also reports at the time of Dumbarton playing in a Glasgow Hibernians tournament although details of its completion are unclear. Outside Scotland, Dumbarton's first 'overseas' venture was undertaken with a match against Belfast Distillery. Overall, of these matches, 14 were won, 9 drawn and 5 lost, scoring 82 goals and conceding 50.

Note that Dumbarton had scored 119 goals in all matches during the season, the third season in a row and the fifth time in the club's history that the 'century' had been broken.

International

An international trial match was played on 15 March 1890 to consider selection of teams to represent Scotland in the upcoming games in the 1890 British Home Championship. John Bell and John McLeod took part.

Subsequently, both players were selected to play for Scotland against Ireland - John Bell earning his first cap, and John McLeod earning his third (his previous caps were with Dumbarton Athletic).

Dumbarton reached the final of the Scottish Second XI Cup for the fourth time before losing to Rangers, but retained the Dumbartonshire Second XI Cup by beating Vale of Leven in the final.

Not to be outdone by the 'first team', the 'Rangers' (as the reserve side were known) were also to chalk up over a 'century' of goals (115) in all matches played during the season.
