1997 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group III
The Group III tournament was held in two locations. Eight teams met January 22-26, in Dakar, Senegal (hard courts), and eight others met May 21-25 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (clay). In each location, the teams were divided into two round-robin pools. The top two teams from each pool advanced to a promotion pool, while the bottom two were placed in a relegation pool. In contrast to earlier (and later) practice, the promotion and relegation pools took the form of play-off brackets, instead of using round-robin play.[1]
