On 1 December 2020, a man rammed pedestrians with an SUV on a street in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, killing five people and wounding 24 others.[2]
Attack
At about 13:46, local time, a man rammed an SUV into people in a pedestrian zone in Trier, killing five people and wounding 24 others. The perpetrator, a 51-year-old from the region, was then arrested.[3] It was reported that the car, a dark grey Land Rover Freelander 2, was driving at high speed.[4] It had been lent to the driver by a friend of his.[5] The driver was alone in the car and had a high alcohol percentage in his blood.[3][5]
Perpetrator
The attacker was identified as a 51-year-old local homeless man, of German nationality. He was born in Trier and at the time of the attack lived in the car.[5] He was arrested four minutes after the attack. It was reported that he consumed a high quantity of alcohol before the incident. Police do not think that the perpetrator acted for political, religious or ideological motives, but for mental health problems mixed with the alcohol abuse. Prosecutor Peter Fritzen said that the man was being interrogated and that the suspect was to be subjected to a psychometric examination.[5][6] While a terrorist motive is excluded so far, investigators said that the man wanted to kill and injure as many people as possible. According to Fritzen, a doctor had reached the preliminary conclusion that the man could be mentally ill.[7]
Victims
Five people were killed during the attack: they were identified as a 45-year-old man and his 9-week-old baby, both Greek nationals,[8] and three German women aged 25, 52 and 73. Twenty-four other people were injured, including a citizen of Luxembourg.[9]
