On December 3, 2021, unidentified gunmen attacked and fired on a bus in Mopti, Central Mali, killing 31 civilians. The bus was mainly composed of women travelling from Songo-Doubacore to a market in Bandiagara.[1]

According to the local mayor of Bankass, during the massacre, the gunmen first started by slashing the tires, proceeding to shoot the civilians to death.[1] Malian authorities sent a group of state security officers to the crime scene,[2] where they found 25 burnt bodies in the vehicle's trunk.[3]

The massacre occurred on the same day that Islamist rebels attacked a convoy in the region, killing two UN peacekeepers. The attacks occurred during a recent insurgency among jihadists in West Africa.[4]
