The 749th Bombardment Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was to the 457th Bombardment Group, stationed at Sioux Falls Army Air Field, South Dakota. It was inactivated on 28 August 1945.
History
It was established as a B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber squadron, trained under the Second Air Force. It was deployed to England in late 1943, assigned to the VIII Bomber Command. It engaged in the strategic bombardment campaign of Nazi Germany and Occupied Europe during 1944–1945, The personnel were demobilized in the United Kingdom and returned to the United States. The squadron was reassigned to the Second Air Force and programmed for B-29 Superfortress training. No personnel or aircraft were assigned as a result of the end of war with Japan. The squadron was inactivated in August 1945.
