The Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub, also known as The Nines, is a chain of casual dining restaurants in the Northeastern United States. It is headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, with 97 locations (as of May 2023) in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.[1]

The Ninety Nine was founded in 1952 when Charles F. "Charlie" Doe (d. 2006) opened a restaurant at 99 State Street in Boston.[2] The chain uses a horseshoe in its logo after Doe's wife gave him one to hang in his restaurant.[2] Doe expanded the restaurant into the Boston suburbs and then to other states in New England, making him an early pioneer of the casual dining experience.[3][4]

The chain was owned by Doe's family until 2002 when it was sold to Nashville-based O'Charley's group.[5] At this point, the chain had 74 restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont and Connecticut.[5] In 2017, the chain was purchased by J. Alexander's, becoming a fully-owned subsidiary of theirs.[6]

In 2019, Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub was sold, along with several other brands, to the Houston-based hospitality group called SPB Hospitality by J. Alexander's Holdings. This deal was one of the strategic moves initiated by SPB in expanding its portfolio of restaurant brands across the country.

Through its growth, the Ninety Nine has retained a commitment to community involvement through a warm atmosphere, American comfort food, and community participation. Many locations team with local charities, sports teams, and community groups to carry out the eatery's deep-rooted philosophy of commitment to regional roots.

The menu at the Ninety Nine features all of the comforting favorites from burgers, to steaks and seafood, to lighter items like salads and sandwiches.

It also has claims to fame such as "Baby Back Ribs" and its signature "Boneless Wings." In particular, the lunch specials are very well known for reasonably priced portions of food. Family dining is also stressed with menu choices such as a children's menu and deals such as the "Kids Eat Free" deal on certain days.

It still remains one of the favorite places to go to for its combination of nostalgia, comfort, and casual dining that cements it as a Northeastern institution.
