Kim Clijsters was the defending champion, but she did not qualify this year following a long-term wrist injury.

Maria Sharapova, on her WTA Tour Championships debut, defeated Serena Williams in three sets to win the title. This was the final time in which Sharapova defeated Williams, losing the next 20 encounters in succession up until her retirement in February 2020.[1][2]
