Pearl Abyss is a South Korean video game developer and publisher. While a young company, the developer is known for creating the breakout hit Black Desert Online which became a hit worldwide.
History
The company was founded in September 2010 by Kim Daeil,[2] previously a developer with Hangame and NHN Gaming, and began development of Black Desert Online shortly after.[3][4][5] When the game released in 2014, it was a huge success not just in Korea but all over the world too. Due to the new found success of the game, Pearl Abyss decided to take over publishing rights and publish the game themselves rather than partnering with a 3rd party publisher.[6] The success of Black Desert Online led to the development of another game, Crimson Desert which is set to be a single player game rather than an MMO.[7] On September 6, 2018, Pearl announced that they had agreed to acquire CCP Games, developer of Eve Online for about US$425 million. CCP's development studios in Reykjavik, London, and Shanghai would continue under CCP Games, while the publishing and marketing functions of CCP would be integrated with Pearl Abyss.[8]
