Her paternal grandparents were Russian-Jewish immigrants, and her mother was a Texan, of English, Welsh, and French ancestry.[citation needed] According to Gilford, her mother wouldn't allow her to act in film as a child.[3]

She is married to actor Robert Pine.[2] They are the parents of the actor Chris Pine[2] and Katherine Pine.[5] After retiring from acting, she and Katherine studied to become practicing psychotherapists.[6]
