Mense
Appearance
A mense (from the Latin "mensa") (English: meal, table) is the name of the ecclesiastical income in the Catholic Church.
Background
The mense is usually a land tax whose income is used for the maintenance of its holder (i.e. bishop, abbot, canons, pastor, etc.). In the abbeys in commende , the abbey mense is divided into three lots, one for the commendatory abbot, one for the religious community and another devoted to the payment of charges.[1]
- to the bishop or to the abbot (Mense épiscopale );
- to canons or monks (Mense capitulaire );
- to the parish priest or minister (Mense curiale ).
