Development

On 18 December 2019, Rahul Sankrityan (of Taxiwaala fame) narrated a script to Nani, which is considered to be an "innovative story".[5] The project was initially reported to be produced under Suryadevara Naga Vamsi's Sithara Entertainments banner, who initially worked with Nani in Jersey (2019).[5] The film was announced on 24 February 2020, with the title Shyam Singha Roy,[6] and was expected to go on floors in May 2020,[7] although the launch was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India.[8] During March 2020, A. R. Rahman was approached to compose music for the film, however he declined owing to a busy schedule.[9] and Nirav Shah was in charge of handling the cinematography.[10]

The film was expected to be made up on a huge scale, marking the most expensive film in Nani's career.[11] However, producer Naga Vamsi wanted to cut down the budget citing the pandemic situation, as the estimated cost was much higher;[12] Vamsi wanted to shelve the project, after Nani completing the shoot of Tuck Jagadish. Due to differences of opinion between Nani and Vamsi, the former changed the movie to the hands of Venkat Boyanapalli,[13] and announced that he will be producing the film under his newly established banner Niharika Entertainment.[14]

On 25 October 2020, a new poster was launched coinciding with Dusshera, with the inclusion of composer Mickey J. Meyer, cinematographer Sanu John Varghese and editor Naveen Nooli.[15] Director Sankrityan revealed that the film is based on the theme of reincarnation,[16][17] which is set in the backdrop of Kolkata.[18]

Casting

With Sai Pallavi (in his collaboration with Nani after Middle Class Abbayi),[19][20] was roped in as one of the two female leads,[21][22] the makers initially wanted to cast Rashmika Mandanna.[23] However, she turned down the offer,[24] opining that her character would be side-lined by Sai Pallavi.[25] Anupama Parameswaran was rumoured to be cast in the film,[26] although Krithi Shetty was finalized later.[27][28] Madonna Sebastian was roped in as the third female lead.[29] Murali Sharma, Abhinav Gomatam, and Rahul Ravindran were later included in the cast.[30]

Filming

The film was launched at a private ceremony in Hyderabad on 10 December 2020,[31] in the presence of the cast and crew,[32] and Nani's father gave the muhurat shot for the film.[33] Principal photography began on 21 December 2020 in Hyderabad, India.[34][18] A Kolkata-themed street along with the Kalighat Kali Temple is being constructed on a budget of 6 crore.[35][36]

Release

The film was scheduled for a release of 25 December 2020, coinciding with Christmas,[37] but was eventually postponed as filming delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
